UAE and Global Warming

Although the UAE signed the United Nations’
Kyoto protocol on global warming, it is found that the UAE is one of the countries with the highest demand on the glob ecosystem. The emirates are consuming away energy by cooled swimming pools, huge 4×4s, artificial resort islands, an indoor ski slope and air conditioners in every house, car and shopping mall. The environmental agencies are putting planes to cut emissions, through reducing the use of air conditions. Campaigns are motivating people to turn down their air conditioning. But the need to live a good life which is somehow felt by the air conditioning every where, it is a hard solution to achieve.

From my point of view, I see that it is a harsh report which puts our country on the top of the scale of consuming away energy and spreading emissions. They didn’t look at the problem from different sight as they didn’t put in consideration the effect of our hot weather in our life. People will not be able to work in offices with out air conditions, how can they concentrate and produce for the country under 45 degrees in July! We also shouldn’t forget about the transportation, shopping malls and clubs, with out air conditioning people will find difficulties in their normal daily life. Tourism will be affected also, as nowadays the UAE is trying to use it as an alternative resource to increase the country economy instead of relaying on oil. In my opinion, I see that people here in the UAE or even in the Middle East don’t pay attentions to the issue of global warming in which if still not felt and it is not threatening our life as poverty and war does.

Carbon Footprint

A carbon footprint is a way to measure the impact of the climate as It's an indicator of amount of the greenhouse gases (GHG). this is directly and indirectly caused by activity or is accumulated over the lift stage of a product. I measured my carbon footprint by using the following sites http://footprint.wwf.org.uk/. It was 2.88 earth equivalent which means that I'm below the UK average. However when I used http://www.myfootprint.org it was 8.93earth equivalent. That means that my average from both sites was 5.905earth equivalent. On the other hand, my earth equivalent results for my classmate was 8.365, 8.225, 6.08, 7.59. that means I have the lowest consumption of my classmates. That means that if everyone live like me, we will would need sex planet, of course that is impossible. So, we have to reduce our consumption.

Let me highlight the problems. For example, I use my car every day. It may not cause a lot of pollution, but this still contributes atmospheric pollution. Secondly, recycling is one of the problems. I always buy household items like, mobile phones, mp3 players, TVs and many other goods. But I finally throw them away and be burned, this will effect the environment.

The solutions are as follows, I can reduce my driving by planning exactly where I want to go and when.Secondly, I have to reduce buying household items.for example, I can buy them every three years instead of annually.

To summarise, these are some of my ecological footprint issues and the solutions offered are the best ways to reduce the problems in my opinion. In fact, we know that as the atmospheric carbon dioxide levels rises so does atmospheric temperature, which is called global warming. Therefore, to be responsible global citizens, It is better to monitor our ecological footprint at ever
opportunity.

Cool City

Increases in energy consumption, and increase in the amount of carbon dioxide and traffics are the problems that are associated with economic development, since the start of the Iindustrial Revolution. These are very serious problems and if we don't solve them we will need another earth. In addition, we have to decrease about 1.5 of the amount of carbon dioxide that is emitted into the air to live within the capacity of a single earth.

In Japan during the last 30 years, The GDP(Gross Demestic Product) has risen 100 % while energy efficiency has increased 37 % and oil consumtion has decreased 8 percent. Where 90% of carbon dioxide that emitted into the air comes from buildings and transportation.

A cool city is a model city that has adapted a new method of technology. SDCJ is building thisproject and they are from Japan. In the cool city there will be three types of transportation, Monorial station, Light Rail ransit station and water transportation. There are various zones in the city. For example, business, residential and a cultural zone. Using water, trees and roof membrane are some techiniques that will help to reduce heat. It is expected that CO2 reductions is about 50% of commertiol buildings and 30% of roof resedance buildings. Finally, the overall percentage of reduction of CO2 emissions that claimed in the video is 60%.
